Elephants, King Kong, Auras and the Isle of Light

I'm listening to Dido CDs on the stereo... Life For Rent at the moment now... as my teenage daughter reads aloud to me from some books we picked up at the library this afternoon for her research project. One of the books is called Why Elephants Have Big Ears: Understanding Patterns of Life on Earth by Chris Lavers. My daughter is so excited by this book that she's reading it from cover to cover instead of simply excerpting bits from it.... stopping to exclaim every now and then about an exciting bit of fascinating information, such as: "It's impossible for elephants to get any bigger than they currently are. Elephants have to have short necks because their heads are so heavy... so if their heads were any bigger, their bodies couldn't support the weight!" and "It is likely that elephants evolved from smaller animals with prototrunks, such as animals like tapirs have." All this talk about animals reminds me of recent research I've heard about which reported that animals enjoy similar emotions to humans... how mice and rats laugh when tickled and sing to court their mates... and of course, we've heard for years how elephants love to express their creativity through their paintings... so these are things I think about as my daughter is reading aloud to me and commenting on her own ideas about animal evolution. I'm having fun hearing explanations of why King Kong couldn't have climbed the Empire State building... because he would have needed more muscles than his body could accommodate just to support his size sitting on the ground, let alone managing to hoist all that simian mass high in the air.
